WESST is a network of thirteen engineering student societies at schools across western Canada – from British Columbia to Manitoba.

WESST Executives Meeting is a conference held in May that serves as an opportunity for engineering student society executives to discuss best practices, transition incoming and outgoing executives, and learn from each other. It is also an opportunity to discuss the direction of WESST itself, as it includes a plenary session.

This year, SFU Burnaby (colloquially, SFU Mountain) hosted WESST EM.

MEET THE DELEGATES

This year, we sent five delegates: the incoming and outgoing conference directors (Meagan & Erica), the incoming President (Jeanie), the incoming VP Spirit (Kylie) and the incoming VP Academic (Jakob). Three of our delegates – Erica, Kylie, and Jeanie – ran sessions to share their skills with other schools.

DAY ONE: THURSDAY

On Thursday evening, we arrived and checked in. We spend most of the evening meeting other schools, prepping our sessions, and reviewing the documents for plenary.

DAY TWO: FRIDAY

Friday was the first real day: we began by getting on a bus and heading out to SFU Burnaby. The mountain was a little drizzly in the morning, but by midday the sunshine had broken through and it was absolutely gorgeous.

We started the morning with an introduction to WESST, before we parted ways to go to our morning sessions. Erica, Meagan and Jeanie went  to “Alex’s Meeting”, a pre-plenary discussion lead by the WESST President, while Jakob headed to “Effective Team Management”and Kylie headed to a session on “Avoiding Burnout”.

After regrouping for lunch, we joined a larger discussion on Inclusivity.

For the rest of the day, we had some free time – so much free time, in fact, that we ventured back to UBC to gather some patches and become Travelling Red Sales. Would recommend: we sold a lot of UBC Engineers swag to other schools. #everyonelovesredsales

DAY THREE: SATURDAY

Day three was the meat & bones of the conference – pretty much all the sessions happened on Saturday. We were at the SFU Harbour campus, and got a chance to see their spiffy downtown location. Three of our delegates ran sessions on Saturday, and they went pretty well if we don’t say so ourselves!

Your EUS continues working! We learned some things, met some people, and have some new ideas – stay tuned this summer for our plans for 2016-17.
