FIRST YEAR

(This is what you should take if you are a first year entering UBC in 2014W. This is the general path – if you’re in IB or AP, you may have some exemptions, or if you are in the pre-med path you will have some slightly different courses.)

COMPLEMENTARY STUDIES

What’s complementary studies? Basically all of the non-engineering courses you will end up taking – things like english. You will need to complete these five requirements before you graduate. You may be able to replace these courses with equivalents.

1) PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • APSC 450 (take this fourth/fifth/final year!)

2) COMMUNICATION

  • ENGL 112 (take this first year!)
  • APSC 201 (take this second year!)

3) ECONOMICS

  • CIVL 403/EECE 450/MECH 431/MINE 396/MTRL 455 (take this third or fourth year, department specific)

4) IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON SOCIETY

  • APSC 261/APSC 262/APSC 263/APSC 364/APSC 462/CIVL 200/CONS 210/CPSC 430/ECON 339/ECON 374/ENVR 410/FRST 415/GEOG 122/GEOG 250/GEOG 310/GEOG 352/HIST 106/HIST 396/HIST 425/PHIL 435/POLI 361/POLI 369T/SCIE 220/SOCI 260/SOCI 342/URST 200 (take this third or fourth year, you can request other courses to be approved through Engineering Student Services if you think they cover the impact of technology on society)

5) HUMANITIES

  • Take 6 credits of anything from the Faculty of Arts EXCEPTscientific geography courses, statistics courses, technical or scientific courses, studio/performance courses in fine arts, music and theatre, ANTH 140, CLST 301, PHIL 120, PHIL 125, PHIL 220, PSYC 218. (take at least 3 credits of this first year)
  • If you end up taking 6 credits of language, make sure your Impact of Technology on Society is from the Faculty of Arts
