Giovanna Janes (She/Her)
Materials Engineering
My name is Giovanna Janes (she/her). I’m in my third year of Materials Engineering as well as a Javelin thrower on the varsity track team. In 2019 our team made NAIA history being the only school to win both men’s and women’s national tittle in Track and Field. After a successful opening meet, I am excited to have already qualified for nationals where we hope to take home the title once again. Within the varsity community, I am a member of the Thunderbirds Athletic Council (TAC) where I represent my team as we discuss important upcoming events including pressing for equity and inclusion in sport.
John Cookson (He/Him)
Biomedical Engineering
It has been a theme of my life to keep active and to continually challenge myself through athletics, and I am very thankful to be recognized for this with the GE Ted Baynes Award. I have been involved in coaching and leading youth sports so that others can have the same enjoyable experiences. At UBC, I help lead the Biomedical Engineering Student Team, a design team with approximately 60 members and 6 projects per year. It has been rewarding to help work with project leads and to engage in outreach events for prospective new members and incoming UBC students.
