The University of British Columbia’s Annual Engineering Competition (EC)

The University of British Columbia Engineering Competition (UBC-EC) is an annual event organized by the Engineering Undergraduate Society (EUS) at UBC. This competition welcomes all currently enrolled UBC engineering students to participate and showcase their engineering prowess.

This year's competition theme is Forging Canadas Future Through Natural Resources and the dates will be November 30th and December 1st.

Event Description

UBC-EC comprises four exciting events, each designed to challenge and stimulate the innovative minds of the participants:

1. Junior Design: This event is exclusively for first and second-year students. Teams of four are presented with a real-world engineering problem. Equipped with the necessary materials, they have a limited time to design and construct a solution. Afterward, the teams must deliver a concise presentation and subject their solution to testing by a panel of judges.

2. Senior Design: Geared towards upper-year students, Senior Design also presents teams of four with an engineering design challenge on the day of the competition. Teams have several hours to implement their solution with provided materials. They must prepare a short presentation outlining their approach to solving the design problem and demonstrate their prototype.

3. Impromptu Debate: In this event, teams of two competitors engage in parliamentary-style debate with minimal preparation. The goal is to assess the competitors' abilities to convey ideas and develop arguments. Unlike formal debates, the rules are relaxed to emphasize analytical techniques and rapid response to a topic revealed just before the event.

4. Consulting Engineering: This competition challenges teams to design a detailed solution for a large-scale engineering problem. On the competition day, competitors are presented with the problem and given up to 4 hours to develop a solution. They must also submit a report and prepare a presentation with a focus on promoting their solution to potential customers in the form of judges.
